Training Description:
Participants will be provided with updated information on: transmission, prevention symptoms and treatment of hepatitis C, diagnosis, progression, and treatment in hepatitis C.  Information on resources and education to deliver hepatitis C presentations to local communities and advocating for the needs of people infected with hepatitis C will be shared. Training topics include: The Liver, HCV Diagnostics, HVC Transmission and Prevention, HCV Symptoms, Disease Progression and Disease Management, Medical Treatments for HCV, Alternative and Complementary Therapies.

Objectives:
At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
*Describe physical features of the liver & how they are affected by liver damage.
*Classify the different types of hepatitis.  Explain transmission, prevention, symptoms, and treatments for hepatitis C.
*Explain basic information regarding hepatitis C.
*Name and describe the various tests used in diagnosing hepatitis C.
*Contrast between acute and chronic hepatitis C and describe possible long-term liver damage related to hepatitis C infection.
*Identify various methods helpful in managing hepatitis C including current medical and complementary treatments for hepatitis C and the side effects.
*Communicate a plan of action of how to educate and support others in your community about viral hepatitis.

Target Audience:
Health educators, HIV/STD counselors & testers, medical providers, substance abuse counselors, case managers, support group leaders, people living with HCV, other health professionals who will provide education, support and advocacy for people and populations affected by hepatitis C.

All participants are required to download the HCV Guide to Understanding Hepatitis C in order to take the quiz attached with the confirmation letter you will receive after registering. 

Registration Fee:
Registration for this training is free. Participants will receive training materials, substance abuse CEUs or certificates of completion, breakfast, lunch and snacks.

Continuing Education:
Substance Abuse - The Iowa Board of Certification has approved 7.25 hours: Category A Special Populations CEUs.

Social Work - $12 additional fee
This program complies with the standards and criteria in Chapter 281 Continuing Education for Social Workers for 7.25 contact hours.

Nursing: $20 additional fee
The Family Planning Council, an Iowa Board of Nursing Provider (IBON) Approved Provider, No. 262. This is a 0.8 CEU program. IBON requires all participants attend in full to obtain CEU credit.  Partial credit may be awarded in extreme emergencies.

Presenters:
Alan Franciscus, a nationally recognized authority on hepatitis C (HCV) has appeared in various local and national publications as well as on television, radio and several documentaries.  He is the Founder & Executive Director of the Hepatitis C Support Project, Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of the HCV Advocate, a national HCV patient newsletter and website http://www.hcvadvocate.org/.  Alan considers HCV patient advocacy and activism his highest priority.

A block of rooms has been reserved under “Hepatitis C Workshop” for the evening of August 30, 2009, at the Holiday Inn Downtown Mercy Campus, 1050 6th Ave., Des Moines, IA  50314, (515) 283-0151. Individuals are responsible for making their own reservations at their own expense and must call by August 9, 2009 to receive the conference rate of $70 plus tax.  The hotel offers a free hot breakfast and free parking.
