Motivational Interviewing: Building Clinical Proficiency in Iowa July 2013 - 2 Parts
Jul 18, 2013 ¤ Des Moines, IA
What is Motivational Interviewing (MI)?
MI is a client-centered, yet directive, method for enhancing the client's intrinsic motivation to change by exploring and resolving ambivalence. A counselor who uses the MI style expresses empathy, develops discrepancy, rolls with resistance, and supports self-efficacy.
MI is especially useful for engaging and retaining clients in treatment, and is well developed and researched as an evidence-based practice.

Why Attend?
The continuing education series promotes learning of those essential MI concepts and skills that can be used successfully in substance abuse treatment settings. Participants will gain sufficient MI
proficiency to guide and shape the practice of others via peer mentoring and/or clinical supervision.
The initial 2-day introductory session provides a foundation and an understanding of the spirit and method of MI.
The 2-day MI Advanced course expands opportunities to apply MI strategies and techniques to best fit into a practice setting.

Counselors providing substance use and/or co-occurring disorder counseling services in the State of Iowa. Clinicians completing Part 1 and 2 will receive no-cost individualized and group telephone
