Course Description: This webinar will take a look at key components of a prevention of problem gambling program including utilizing a strategic planning framework, including multiple strategies over multiple domains and incorporating best practices in prevention design. Two examples of a planning and development process will be explored, taking into account limited budgets and personnel.

Recoveration Computer Training

Session Description: You've heard the reasons why people don't reach out for help. Well, help is still available any time of day or night. Distance treatment services remove the barriers to treatment access and increase retention and continuity. The Iowa Department of Public Health, in partnership with providers of problem gambling treatment, is committed to offering a statewide network of services. Our ability to provide high quality and flexible services is improved through distance treatment services. In an effort to expand the use of this tool we are offering a 3-hour training on the use of Recoveration, an on-line resource used to improve communication during the treatment and recovery process. Target Audience: Problem gambling counselors and clinicians substance abuse counselors and other helping professionals. Training is ONLY OPEN to State Licensed Problem Gambling Treatment Programs.

This workshop will address several issues that will increase an agency's ability to increase its cultural competency and improve outcomes. Through a deeper understanding of privilege and power along with specific strategies, participants will be able to begin planning changes to their procedures, protocols and/or environments. Participants will examination of organization structure, policies and procedures that need revision to accommodate cultural competence. Specific attention will be given to engagement and retention of identified populations including Latinos and African Americans.

This course will explore practical approaches to culturally appropriate service delivery. Through dialogue, exercises and practical application, participants begin by exploring the importance of culture and cultural competency by examining both the dynamics of difference and the personal filters that one brings to one?s work.
This deeper understanding is then applied to many aspects of selecting and providing culturally competent services. Ample opportunity for practical application of the material on both a personal and professional level will be provided.
