.Gain knowledge of changes in the Substance Abuse and Social Work code of ethics
.Learn a problem solving model for ethical dilemmas
.Think critically to resolve dilemmas

Group Counseling Skills and Techniques - Pre Gov Conference - March 30, 2015

Description: For many counselors, leading counseling groups is a large part of our job but one for which we receive minimal formal training. In this session, the participant will be given the opportunity to develop and enhance his/her group leadership skills as well as deepen his/her understanding of the theory and practice of group counseling.  Each participant should come prepared with a group activity to lead a small group of 6-8 members for approximately 20 minutes.

Objectives: In this interactive workshop, the participant will have the opportunity to:

.Understand the theory and rationale for group counseling including the therapeutic factors/forces at work.
.Relate experiences of leading counseling groups and the challenges/triumphs of counseling in this format.
.Experience and understand how the effective use of group counseling skills can assist the counselor and the client toward more effective and productive group sessions and client recovery.

The Governor's Conference on Substance Abuse is a statewide forum focused on prevention, treatment and recovery while offering recommendations for best practices. The goal of this conference is to establish a meaningful dialogue among substance abuse prevention, treatment, research, recovery and policy-making communities, by focusing on strategies and tools that can facilitate the development of a strategic response to the various challenges in the field. This event is a collaborative effort between the Iowa Department of Public Health, contracted agencies, and other service providers and stakeholders who are committed to the educational advancement of professionals working in the addictions field.

Conference Objectives:
.Provide attendees with practical, timely and relevant skills and knowledge that link science to  practice.
.Offer sessions that promote critical thinking and build partnerships toward improved practices in prevention, treatment and recovery.
.Provide attendees with opportunities to interact with national and regional leaders and practitioners.
.Strengthen our identity as a field united in our commitment to quality science and practice in the area of addiction, problem gambling and mental health.
.Provide attendees with informative exhibits to access the latest technology, products and services

NHTSA Statewide EMS Effectiveness Reassessment - April 28-29, 2015

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) believes that effective emergency medical services (EMS) programs should provide comprehensive, inclusive, and appropriate emergency health care for patients for all ages, adult and pediatric.  The Technical Assistance (TA) Program offer States and communities a consistent tool to use over time in assessing the effectiveness of their EMS programs.  The Re-Assessment process allows a State to assess and evaluate current EMS system effectiveness in relation to the original EMS assessment, subsequent EMS program modifications, and integration of new technology or nationally accepted standards. When asked by the requesting State, the TA Team will also review EMS areas of special interest (ie., data linkage, pediatrics, etc) to further assist the State in making decisions concerning the evolution of their program.
